Experience: Wendy Appelbaum chairs De Morgenzon Estate, a wine farm and agricultural business in Stellenbosch. Her directorships include the Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre (Pty) Limited, a postgraduate teaching hospital; Sphere Holdings (Pty) Ltd, a black empowerment company focused in the financial services and mining sectors; and the nonprofit Synergos Institute Southern Africa, which addresses poverty and social injustice by bringing together government, business, civil society, and local communities. Appelbaum is a trustee of The Donald Gordon Foundation, one of the largest private charitable foundations in Africa; and The Helen Suzman Foundation which works to safeguard and strengthen South Africa's democracy. The Wendy Appelbaum Foundation initiates, selects, and drives programs addressing the health and education concerns of South African women. She is a Donor Advisory Committee Member of Women Moving Millions, which inspires gifts of one million dollars and above towards women's funds. The campaign is a partnership of visionary donors and Women's Funding Network, a global movement investing in solutions to critical social issues. Appelbaum belongs to the Global Philanthropist's Circle, a network of leading philanthropists contributing their time, influence, and resources to fight poverty and social injustice. She is a member of the International Women's Forum, a global organization of women of significant and diverse achievement. Appelbaum was honored in 2006 as one of the Leading Women Entrepreneurs of the World. She was previously the Deputy Chair of Womens' Investment Portfolio Limited (Wiphold Limited), the first women-controlled company to list on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange with assets in excess of R 1 billion.
